RECEPAC Project APA/RVS in Santa Cruz

Period
Beginning End
01/02/2016 30/06/2017

Purpose

Evaluating whether water and sediment matrices from the Environmental Protection Area (APA, Área de Proteção Ambiental) Costa das Algas and the Wildlife Refuge (RVS, Refúgio de Vida Silvestre) in Santa Cruz are causing or not toxic effects on marine species within the protected areas.

The result from this work and the information obtained from biodiversity surveys in that region will allow the identification of the researched area risk level. Based on this knowledge, studies can be proposed to determine which chemical compounds are the possible cause of any environmental damage.

Thus, the unit managers will have relevant references to assist in their decision-making processes and, if necessary, to justify any system interventions.

Specific Purposes

  • Describing any toxic effects of water collected from APA Costa das Algas and RVS Santa Cruz on microalgae and urchin larvae;
  • Describing any toxic effects of sediment collected from APA Costa das Algas and RVS Santa Cruz on burrowing benthic amphipods;
  • Supporting the delimitation of actually ?clean? areas, that can be used as preservation models within the APA Costa das Algas and RVS Santa Cruz, for the areas potentially contaminated by chemicals with toxic effects on aquatic biota;
  • Proposing management activities for planning human activities in these areas, listing priorities and gaps for the conservation process.
